WebSep 30, 2014 · Arrigo Boito was born in Padua in 1842 and died in 1918. He fought under Garibaldi against the Austrians in 1866 when Venice was untied with the rest of Italy. He was mostly a poet, novelist and librettist, but also tried his hand at composing operas, of which Mefistofele is the only one he managed to complete.
