WebFeb 12, 2004 · No finish means one less place to buff and no cleaning of the frets afterwards. Rosewood is harder than maple and less likley to wear. The hard finish on maple actually protects it (and contributes to its brighter sound) from wear. Since rosewood won't wear as badly and dirt won't show, there's no reason to finish it.
